Uganda Wildlife Authority Announces New Permit Tariffs Effective 1 July 2026, What you Need to Know
Uganda continues to cement its reputation as one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations, and from 1 July 2026, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has introduced updated conservation tariffs for several of its flagship tourism activities. While most permit prices remain unchanged, there are a few notable adjustments that travelers and agents should be aware of when planning future safaris.
For anyone dreaming of standing face-to-face with mountain gorillas, tracking wild chimpanzees, or exploring Uganda’s spectacular national parks, here is everything you need to know.
Gorilla Trekking Remains Incredible Value
One of the biggest questions travelers often ask is whether gorilla trekking permit prices have changed.
The answer is no.
The permit fees remain:
- Foreign Non-Residents (FNR): USD 800
- Foreign Residents (FR): USD 700
- Rest of Africa (ROA): USD 500
- East African Citizens (EAC): UGX 300,000
Uganda remains one of the most affordable destinations in the world for mountain gorilla trekking, offering an unforgettable one-hour encounter with these critically endangered primates in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Gorilla Habituation Permit Increased to USD 1,800
The most significant tariff adjustment is the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
Starting 1 July 2026, the permit price has increased from USD 1,500 to USD 1,800 for Foreign Non-Residents.
Current rates are:
- FNR: USD 1,800
- FR: USD 1,600
- ROA: USD 1,000
- EAC: UGX 750,000
Although this represents a USD 300 increase, the Gorilla Habituation Experience remains one of Africa’s most exclusive wildlife adventures.
Unlike standard trekking, which allows visitors one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family, this experience gives guests up to four hours alongside researchers and rangers as they continue the habituation process of a semi-habituated gorilla family.
For photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and conservation lovers, it remains an exceptional investment.
Chimpanzee Experiences Continue to Offer Excellent Value
Chimpanzee lovers can still enjoy Uganda’s world-renowned primate tracking at competitive prices.
Kibale National Park
- FNR: USD 300
- FR: USD 200
- ROA: USD 100
- EAC: UGX 180,000
Chimpanzee Habituation
- FNR: USD 400
- FR: USD 300
- ROA: USD 250
- EAC: UGX 250,000
Kyambura Gorge
- FNR: USD 200
- FR: USD 150
- ROA: USD 100
- EAC: UGX 50,000
Uganda remains one of the few destinations where visitors can choose between traditional chimpanzee tracking and the longer, more immersive habituation experience.
More Exciting Wildlife Activities
The updated tariff structure also includes:
- Rhino Tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
- Experiential Lion Tracking in Queen Elizabeth National Park
- Golden Cat Tracking in Kidepo Valley National Park
- Guided forest walks connecting Bwindi sectors
These experiences allow visitors to diversify their safari while contributing directly to conservation efforts.
Why the Tariff Adjustments Matter
Every wildlife permit purchased contributes directly to:
- Wildlife conservation
- Anti-poaching efforts
- Habitat protection
- Scientific research
- Community development around protected areas
- Sustainable tourism in Uganda
By visiting Uganda, travelers are not only creating lifelong memories but also helping protect some of the world’s most endangered species for future generations.
Book Early, Permits Sell Out Fast
Gorilla permits are limited to protect the wellbeing of the gorillas and frequently sell out months in advance, especially during the dry seasons.
If you’re planning to visit Uganda in 2026, 2027, or beyond, booking early is strongly recommended to secure your preferred dates and gorilla family.
