Embarking on a drive from Volcanoes National Park to Lake Kivu is one of Rwanda’s most rewarding short journeys. The Journey Itself

The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, winding through the lush rolling hills that Rwanda is famed for – often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” As you leave the towering Virunga volcanoes behind, the road undulates through fertile farmlands dotted with banana plantations, eucalyptus groves, and small villages bustling with friendly locals going about their day.

The highlight of this drive is the panoramic vistas. At various bends, the Virunga mountain chain reveals its grandeur, with Mount Karisimbi and Mount Muhabura visible in the distance, often crowned with drifting clouds. Along the route, you will see rural life unfold: children waving enthusiastically, women carrying baskets on their heads, and farmers tending to their lush green terraces – all adding to the cultural richness of the journey.

Arrival at Lake Kivu

As you approach Lake Kivu, the landscape opens up to breathtaking views of the vast lake framed by distant hills across the Congolese border. The deep blue water shimmers under the afternoon sun, and small islands dot its surface like emerald jewels.

The most special moment is the first glimpse of Lake Kivu from the road, often leaving travellers in awe at its size and tranquillity. Upon arrival in towns such as Gisenyi (Rubavu), you’re greeted by a laid-back lakeside atmosphere. Palm trees sway gently along the shore, fishing boats glide silently on the water, and cafés and lodges offer terraces with unmatched sunset views.
